Well woman check

At Richmond Practice we offer you a complete well woman appointment that suits your needs. We can help whether you would just like to have your routine women’s health check in a safe and relaxing environment, have any women’s health concerns or would simply like to discuss certain female health topics in a confidential and reassuring atmosphere.

Our female consultant gynaecologists are available every day from Monday to Saturday to look after you using the best equipment and newest ultrasound technology available to help diagnose any health problems confidently and without delay.

What to expect:
Our well woman check consists of two parts. The first part gives you the opportunity to simply talk to a gynaecologist and answer some questions. Our female gynaecologist will ask you about your menstrual cycle, methods of contraception and if you have any concerns. If you mention any problems the gynaecologist will look into them during the second part of the well woman check. Common problems include irregular periods, unusual vaginal discharge, pelvic pain and urinary problems. These could all suggest disorders, but may not end up being serious at all.

The second part of the well woman check is to perform a number of tests. These range from PAP smears and physical examinations to blood tests or taking tissue samples. The main purpose of a well woman check is to detect any early warning signs of cancer in women (cervical cancer, breast cancer, endometrial cancer – i.e. cancer of the womb - and ovarian cancer) and by detecting it very early allow for immediate treatment and cure.

Services included in our well woman check:
  • Abdominal examination
  • Thorough breast examination
  • Examination of the vulva, vagina and cervix (neck of the womb)
  • Pelvic Examination of the female inner organs – uterus and ovaries
  • Cervical cancer screening test – the PAP smear
  • An abdominal or internal ultrasound (if required at an additional charge)
  • Contraception or other female health advice if needed
  • A consultation to discuss any of your women’s health concerns
  • Blood pressure check
  • Weight check
  • Urine analysis

If we find anything abnormal or suspicious we can add further tests, for example:

  • HPV virus test
  • Blood test to check for hormones
  • Biopsy of the lining of the womb to detect endometrial cancer
  • Swabs to check for infections
  • Infertility screening
  • Incontinence investigations and treatment
  • Referral for a breast ultrasound or mammogram

You can book a women’s health check with us without needing a referral from another doctor and we usually offer same day appointments. You will have the opportunity to see the same doctor for follow-on visits and she will inform you personally of your results, and give you any required explanations, without delay
